The inductive theory of natural selection

Steven A. Frank Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of California, Irvine, CA 92697–2525 USA The theory of natural selection has two forms. Deductive theory describes how populations change over time. One starts with an initial population and some rules for change. From those assumptions, one calculates the future state of the population. Deductive theory predicts how populations adapt to environmental challenge. Inductive theory describes the causes of change in populations. One starts with a given amount of change. One then assigns different parts of the total change to particular causes. Inductive theory analyzes alternative causal models for how populations have adapted to environmental challenge. This chapter emphasizes the inductive analysis of cause.

Selection of Resistive and Inductive Superconductor Fault Current Limiters Location Considering System Transient Stability
Superconductor fault current limiter (SFCL) is an effective device to suppress high fault currents. This paper presents a comparative study of resistive and inductive fault current limiters from transient stability point of view. Appropriate location and type of the limiters in a HV substation is selected by a qualitative approach based on the equal area criterion. Study system is simulated by...
متن کاملWhat is wrong with intelligent design?
While a great deal of abuse has been directed at intelligent design theory (ID), its starting point is a fact about biological organisms that cries out for explanation, namely “specified complexity” (SC). Advocates of ID deploy three kind of argument from specified complexity to the existence of a designer: an eliminative argument, an inductive argument, and an inference to the best explanation...

We present some model theoretic results for {L}ukasiewiczpredicate logic by using the methods of continuous model theorydeveloped by Chang and Keisler. We prove compactness theorem with respect to the class of allstructures taking values in the {L}ukasiewicz $texttt{BL}$-algebra.We also prove some appropriate preservation theorems concerning universal and inductive theories. Finally, Skolemizatio...
متن کاملAn Analysis of A Fishing Model with Nonlinear Harvesting Function
In this study, considering the importance of how to exploit renewable natural resources, we analyzea shing model with nonlinear harvesting function in which the players at the equilibrium pointdo a static game with complete information that, according to the calculations, will cause a wasteof energy for both players and so the selection of cooperative strategies along with the...
متن کاملPuzzles in modern biology. V. Why are genomes overwired?
Many factors affect eukaryotic gene expression. Transcription factors, histone codes, DNA folding, and noncoding RNA modulate expression. Those factors interact in large, broadly connected regulatory control networks. An engineer following classical principles of control theory would design a simpler regulatory network. Why are genomes overwired? Neutrality or enhanced robustness may lead to th...
